Macquarie Island
On 3 December, 1997 Macquarie Island was listed as a World Heritage Area - the second Tasmanian World Heritage Area. Macquarie Island is a site of outstanding geological and natural significance on a world scale.The island is one of only a very few in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean where fauna in the region can breed. Around 3.5 million seabirds and 80,000 elephant seals arrive on Macquarie Island each year to breed and moult. Fur seals are beginning to re-establish populations on the island after nearly being exterminated in the early 19th century.
Antarctica
The Antarctic is the region around the Earth's South Pole polar opposites to the North Pole in the Arctic.  The Antarctic comprises the continent of Antarctica and the ice shelves, waters and island territories in the Southern Ocean. The region covers some 20% of the Southern Hemisphere 5.5% is the surface area of the continent itself. It is an explorers paradise with many famous explorers racing to reach the south pole including two famous british explorers Scott and Shackleton. Antarctica is one of the world last true wild frontiers still untamed by humans and is the key to survival for a number of penguin species. It is also a whaling, seal and sea lion playground and of vital importance as a sanctuary for many marine species.
